I dont know what is wrong with my tortoise!

Could you please help me?

My tortoise is about 10 months old and we have had him for just over a month now.
When we first got him, he was very active, ate regularly and drank normally as well.
Over the past week, he has stopped eating, makes squeaking noises while opening his mouth a lot, and is hardly moving anywhere. He seems to be struggling to.
We have no idea what is wrong! Please help?

I am so sorry you lost your pet.

If you decide you want another one, I suggest you get one through a reputable breeder. A breeder takes much better care of their animals, cares much more about reputation, and probably cares more about animals in general. The animals usually cost more, but you have more guarantees and someone to ask questions of if you do run into problems.

Also, if you do decide to get another tortoise, Sterilize everything you want to reuse. Otherwise it's possible to pass infections on to the new animal.

Hi thanks for your comments but unfortunately shelldon died before his vet appointment today we are all devastated 😢 temps and everything was fine! We only had 4wks ago I can't help but think he was ill before we had him because I followed everything down to a t, got in contact with the pet shop and they don't seem to give a monkeys!! Haven't broke the news to my daughter yet. I feel broken. X

I am sorry your tortoise friend is sick. Yes, it is likely that it was sick when you bought it. It is also unlikely that the place that sold it will do anything.

Please take this animal to a reptile vet as soon as possible. This problem is not likely to get better if left alone.

So glad I've just come across this because my horsefield tortoise as exact same symptoms but we've only had him 3 weeks. Does anybody know what causes this and is it likely that mine would of had this before we had him because he's been the same since day 1. We followed the aftercare sheet down to a t temp is perfect we leave uv light on 12 hours a day and use soil as bedding. I'm so worried that he may be in pain and I'm finding it really upsetting 😢 I've been in contact with the shop I got it from and they've said they'd take a look at him but seem to be dragging their feet.

sounds like he has a upper respiratory infection. he is opening his mouth trying to breathe. get him to the vet asap. there is non home remedy for this, he will need meds to recover.

i'm not sure about the rest of it, but the squeaking is mating noises, it's about spring time. check to make sure you have the right temperature and humidity levels right and that you are feeding it the correct foods, that may help the rest of the problems.
