is it shell rot

hello my turtle rocky has a black spot on his shell, but it's like i gently rub my nail on it nothing comes off or anything he seems to be shredding his shell i think hes a missisipi map' turtle but i'm worried if it could spread i dont wanna go to the vets coz it's money wise an it's a waste if there's nothin wrong with him i have 2 other turtles an i'm worried if i'ts anything it could spread ..

There is a lot of information there about shells. Maybe you will recognize your turtle's condition.

It is always a good idea to check with your local vet. Yes, it costs money, but if you have a contagious disease, going to the vet can only save you money in the long run.
