is my tortoise safe?

I'm going to have a pet tortoise soon.I'm trying to find out what to put in its terrarium.I was thinking sand.But I heard rumors that they eat it and it messes up there in intestines.Is it safe to put sand it the terrarium?

I'm glad I looked up this answer for you because I thought sand would be OK since lots of tortoises live in sandy places.
