In the wild, a Russian Tortoise will hibernate most of the year. Some in captivity don't hibernate. How can you decide what to do?
First, your tortoise will need to sense cold weather coming to want to hibernate.
Second, if you do want your tortoise to hibernate, be sure to have it checked before. You want only a healthy tortoise to hibernate and you don't want any parasites hibernating with your tortoise. Visit your vet.
Finally, your Russian tortoise will need to build a burrow to hibernate, so be sure there is a place deep enough for her to burrow into.
Keep it slow and steady

Is it a boy or a girl? by: Shelly
There are two ways to tell whether you have a boy or a girl tortoise.
1. Look at the bottom of the shell. If is concave -- sort of dinted in -- you have a boy.
2. Loot at the tail. Males have longer and thicker tails. Of course, this works only if you have the other sex to compare with.
Keep it slow and steady.
