Lonely tortoise?

I have a 4 year old Hermann's tortoise, I bought him from a pet shop when he was 18 months old and he was living with around 12 other tortoises.

Lately I've noticed he seems to spend alot of time facinated with mirrors and will go straight towards one if he sees it.

Is this a pure facination for mirrors or could he be lonely?

I'd love another but I've read many contradicting stories about pairing them so am undecided.
