My Herman Tortoise was active and now is not

by Hellen Poole

I have had my 1 year old Herman Tortoise for 3 weeks now, for the first 2 weeks he was fine very active and had a good appetite. Now the last 5 days he has been very inative by constantly laying in his basking area and then burries himself in his hut when the lights go out. He is eating but nowhere near the amount he was before these last 5 days.

I have a ceramic, basking light and UV the hot spot is between 90-95 and cool area 75-80. I have been given various different amounts of advise ranging from change the temperature to its because he had a grape and wants another one.

My concern is he is ill! He does eat (although very little), he has no problems going to the toilet but is very sluggish and inactive.

Please tell me what you all think.

New Pet

It's quite possible that your new pet is just settling in. If this persists, see a vet. It's a good idea to see a vet in any case when you get a new animal.
