Red eared slider trying to pick up rocks with hands

Our red eared slider keeps trying to grab the rocks in his front "feet". He isunable to actaully get one but we feel sorry for the guy b/c he seems so intent on getting one.

Is this problem b/c he squeezes his feet so hard that they twitch?.
