RES and hibernation

hi, i was given a RES by a neighbor for my kindergarten classroom. he/she has been sleeping and not eating for the past few weeks. he/she does come up for air every once in awhile. there is a heater in the 30 gallon tank, and i haven't put on the heating lamp figuring it was hibernating. i am getting a lot of mixed signals about this, whether it is hibernating or not. HELP. confused
