I do not know the answer to this question, but I think it depends on how long the animal has to hold the weight. Isn't that how it is with humans? Humans can carry around some extra weight, but weight lifters can lift much greater weights but hold them up for only a short time.

That still doesn't answer the question, I would actually like to know this. I dont own one nor intend to use one as a pack animal. It just piqued my curiosity after seen that animals like to ride them, some of which are rather large and bare the weight seemingly effortlessly.
There certainly has to be some sort of exercise done that demonstrates their max lifting capacity as a part of a physiology study of the animal. Sadly the internet seems to turn up dry on the subject so I thought try an enthusiast site such as this to gain information.

They are not pack animals. Therefore they are not made to carry any sort of weight. If you want an animal that will carry something then I sugest get a donkey.
