Its best for your boy to have a tortoise as turtles grow very big and clean water every day i recomend a horsfield tortoise

red eared slider by: Anonymous
The only turtle I would suggest for a 10 year old would be a red eared slider . I owned them as a child and as long as your child is up for the care makes a great pet . But keep in mind many turtles get bought and the child gets tired of it and then the turtle no longer gets the care it needs . They live for a very LONG time . Also if you do get a turtle make sure your child knows how important hand washing is after touching the turtle . Although they prefer to not be touched and do there own thing :)

Which turtle? by: Shelly
No turtle will be low maintenance. They need to have clean water, which involves cleaning the vivarium often. Evaluate carefully what you are prepared to do before you make the commitment to buy a turtle.
