why is my horsefield tortoise eating mud?

I have just recently bought a horsefield tortoise it is 3 years old he has been eating well but has suddenly stoped,also everytime i let him outside he trys to eat mud is this ok? what should i do ? Also are they aloud to eat lettuce?

When we let our horsefield tortoise have a wonder around the garden (with us watching him ) he goes straight for the stones and starts eatin them. Just wondering why this is?????

I'm not sure if it's the same, but these were eating mud to get water.
